Radio Promotions and youth audiences

Monday, July 16th, 2007

It’s interesting to note that radio isn’t as unpopular with teens as is being made out by some commentators. Youth oriented station’s like Dublin Spin 103.8 FM continue to go from strength to strength and a new regional version of the station is due to be launched later this year. Anecdotal evidence from a focus group we held with a number of teenagers also shows that this fickle audience is also happy to sit through ads until the song they’ve been waiting to hear is played. One interesting thing to note about youth radio stations though is that the audience is most engaged in the later afternoon and early evening, i.e. when they get back to school. So if you are targeting this group that’s the key time to book shows for radio promotions.

New regional station launches

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Regional media continue to go from strength to strength in Ireland. News comes through that SPIN South West is due to launch on 4th July 2007. The station will cover will cover Limerick, Kerry, Clare, Laois and Tipperary and is primarily aimed at the 15 - 34 age group, similar to its sister station, SpinFM in Dublin. It’s interesting to note that it is youth focused and we’ll be watching closely with how it competes with the likes of Limerick’s Live 95FM.

The Irish Times reports (subscription required) on a number of appointments at the publication - Mary Fitzgerald has been appointed as Foreign Affairs correspondent, Martin Wall as Industry Correspondent of The Irish Times and John Collins has been appointed business reporter specialising in coverage of the technology sector.

The paper’s business section has also been revamped. The traditional backpage interview has been brought inside the supplement and Ciaran Hancock now has a regular column in its place. Unfortunately Dave Rooney’s weekly illustration has been dropped. A sample of his previous illustrations can be found on his website.

Damien Kiberd steps back in front of the microphone at NewsTalk again to present of Down to Business, which has been without a permanent fixture since Emmet Oliver’s departure to join Bloomberg in London.

Local radio continues to dominate in Ireland

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

The latest JNLR figures highlight the strength of local radio in Ireland. Independent Radio Sales sent us a press release pointing out that three million Irish adults tune into local radio everyday. That’s 40% more listeners than the RTE stations combined.

The stats are in line with the Irish research from this year’s Edelman Trust Barometer. Irish people trust people from their own locality than anywhere else in the world. It’s no surprise so that regional media has continued to go from strength to strength here.

The darker side of

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

Roy Greenslade points out an interesting letter in the Financial Times about London’s freesheets:

Sir, Surely by now every last Londoner has been approached on the street by a distributor of one of London’s ‘free’ daily newspapers. These papers may be free to readers, but they also carry real costs for other social groups in the city.

Free dailies externalise their production costs in at least three ways. They clutter and detract from the appearance of our streetscapes and public spaces (costs to all Londoners); they generate great volumes of rubbish which then become the disposal problem of boroughs (costs to borough residents); and they create extra cleaning costs for Transport for London when papers are left behind on trains and in stations (costs to TfL and therefore transport users).

Given that 400,000 copies of each paper circulate daily (19m pages), these costs are not insignificant. We might be wise to ask whether free London dailies are really free - and if they are not, then who pays?”

Dr David Grover, Department of Geography and Environment, London School of Economics.

Dublin can easily be substituted for London in the letter above. While the Metro and Herald AM have both contributed to anti-litter campaigns, the costs they put on the environment easily outweigh their social contribution. Hundreds of copies of either publication can be seen discarded in the main train stations in Dublin everyday. If the rumours are to be believed about a bidding war between Herald AM and the Metro to get exclusive access to these locations, then a key prerequisite that CIE should demand of either party is the provision on recycling bins.
